Matsumoto Castle is located in Matsumoto city, Nagano prefecture, 2.5 hours by express trains from Tokyo.
Now in Japan, there are only 12 existing castles that still retain their original castle keep. Matsumoto Castle is one of the 12 original construction castles and has five-floor. Five-floor castles are only Matsumoto Castle and Himeji Castel.
In addition, this castle features of the elegant black walls and sometimes called "Crow Castle". The view of Matsumoto Castle with a wide moat, bridges, and Northern Alps Mountains is absolutely photogenic.
In April, approximately 300 cherry trees burst into bloom, and the trees are illuminated at night. It's really stunning!

"Nighttime Cherry Blossom Viewing" is held on 4/10-4/17 at Matsumoto Castle Honmaru Garden. Performances of gagaku (Japanese classical music) with three instruments (sou, shakuhachi), and the flute, will be held in Tsukimi-yagura. Tea ceremony seats will be set in Honmaru Garden and there will be stalls of hanami dango (sweet rice dumplings) and the permanent shop too. Please come and see the festival.
*Admission is 610 yen. Free admisson to the interior garden in the evening during the festival. (However, it is not possible to climb in the tower.)

Access: a 15-min walk from Matsumoto Sta.

*Please check the official website for the latest information.

Very impressive exhibition of a local castle. The interior is well kept and the staff do a good job of organizing the tourists which gives you more time to appreciate the castle. There are interesting exhibits inside the castle to further dive into the history of Matsumoto Castle. The surrounding area has additional exhibits to understand the city in its earlier day.

Great castle with an interesting history and mini museum inside. Also plenty of cherry blossoms in spring to make this a must visit castle if you're anywhere close. Seemed like a popular spot for wedding photography with several couples having photo shoots in the two hours or so I were there.

This was a nice castle. I loved it is original with all the wood awesomeness which is a hallmark of castles in Japan. The atmosphere is great and was a great place to enjoy my time.

I've been to this castle multiple times but the best time to go is when the cherry blossoms are blooming. You do have to pay to tour the castle but it's not that expensive. If you have a large group of people, you can get a discount. This castle isn't as big as the Hemeji castle but worth checking out.

This castle was just beautiful! I was lucky enough to go on a spring day when it had just decided to snow, so we got a black castle with cherry blossom and snow... Stunning to say the least!
The castle is incredible inside and beautifully preserved for over 400 years!
If you're lucky enough to time it right and there's someone available, there are free guided tours with English speaking volunteers (no tips allowed, only a smile). They have an office at the south entrance. Masahiro was my guide and he was just brilliant! He showed me all around the castle and told me incredible facts that you might not get to know if you just read the info guides. Thank you for an incredible, fun and special afternoon... I'll be back one day!
