In early August, Aomori City celebrates the Nebuta Matsuri, a parade of illuminated floats accompanied by thongs of chanting dancers and. The floats often feature images of larger-than-life kabuki actors, historical and mythical characters and various types of gods. The modern floats featuring TV drama characters and famous artworks can also be viewed.
Nebuta Matsuri is one of three major summer festivals in the Tohoku region, alongside Kanto Matsuri in Akita and Tanabata Matsuri in Sendai.
