Hakata Gion Yamasaka is a festival with a 700 year history, annually held during July 1 to 15.
The climax is a spectacular time trial race in the early morning of July 15. In the race, seven neighborhoods of Fukuoka's Hakata district compete in pushing beautifully decorated festival floats along a five kilometer long course through the city.

The festival features two different types of floats.
The larger Kazariyama Floats, now used only for display, stand over ten meters tall and weigh over two tons. They are displayed in 14 spots in the city, and a lot of people visit to see the gorgeous Kazariyama Floats decorated beautifully.
For the race, smaller sized Kakiyama Floats, about five meters tall and one ton heavy are used.

July 12, 15:59~ : Oiyamanarashi
A rehearsal for the Oiyama race. Participants run a shortened 4 km course through the streets of Hakata from Kushida Shrine. The atmosphere is similar to that of the main event, but at a more reasonable time.

Jully 13, 15:30~: Shudanyamamise
The first float departs Gofuku-machi crossing at 3:30 pm. After passing through Meiji-dori, the seven floats line up in front of Fukuoka City Hall.

July 15, 4:59~: Oiyama
The climax of the Hakata Yamakasa festival. The first team leaves the starting line at Kushida Shrine at 4:59 am. Thousands of men from the seven districts race through the streets carrying decorative, one-ton floats.The course takes about 30 minutes to run.
