Aug/16 - 18 Nishimonai Bon Dance Festival3.8
from 8/16 '21 to 8/18 '21
The Nishimonai Bon Odori(Dance) Festival takes place annually in August in Ugo Town, Akita Prefecture, and is known as one of the best three best Bon dance festivals along with the Gujo Odori and the Awa Odori. It dates back over 700 years.
The Nishinomai Bon Dance has two dances, called "Ondo" and "Ganke". Ondo is elegant and beautiful dance. On the other hand, Ganke has a quick tempo, so it's harder to dance than Ondo. And The Nishimonai Bon Odori is also known as the “dance with the spirits of the dead” as participants hide their faces with black hoods known as Hikozukin and woven half-moon hats known as Amigasa while performing their elegant dance.
Accompanied by melancholic traditional music and illuminated by the light of bonfires, the mysterious dancers create a ghostly atmosphere.
There are festival stalls serving food, beverage, and alcohol.
