Jul/14 - 15, 2019 Shiogama Port Festival 4.1
from 7/14 '19 to 7/15 '19
Shiogama city is located in northern Japan in Miyagi prefecture, has prospered as the home of Shiogama Shrine and as a harbour city.
Shiogama Port Festival is known as the one of the Three Major Boat Festivals in Japan.
The festival features mikoshi floats parade through town, and then at sea, sacred shrine boats decorated as dragon and phoenix parade over the sea along with around 100 accompanying boats.
The must-see is that Mikoshi portable shrines from Shiwahiko Shrine and Shiogama Shrine are put on the ships(dragon ship and phoenix ship) and cruise the sea with 100 boats. Music bands such as Japanese traditional drum and flute also accompany the ships so that they bring additional excitement.
You feel like you are viewing a Heian period picture roll!
July 14 is considered the eve, and there are a lot of events such as 10,000 fireworks(20:00～20:50), dance performance, and touring a rescue training of Japan Coast Guard.
July 16 is the main festival, Dragon Ship and Phoenix Ship will show on this day.
Besides, there are a lot of food stalls between 15:00～20:50. Enjoy!

This shrine is truly a special place that must be visited. Do yourself a favour and plan your trip during spring so that you can see the cherry blossoms in full bloom. We were lucky to see some late snow which added even more beauty to the experience. Take the time to walk the long steps and take in the natural serenity of the gardens and surrounds.

Gorgeous shrine. Actually you can visit 2 shrines from this place and enjoy a view of the bay from the top. The shrine is not far from the station, around 15min.

Definitely a place to go n enjoy the multitude of different Cherry Blossoms ... Its a good trek up the hill and u can soak in the atmosphere. I came on a wet morning after the rain... so it was really cold up there, in spring. But when the sun came out... I was not disappointed at the least. There is a small museum showcasing the sword offerings to the temple n the history of the town life. I was a bit awed of the whale skull displayed at the front entrance of the museum😄...For the elderly n disabled ..pls take a taxi from Hon Shiogama Station to the top of the hill.

Well worth the visit to this lovely seaside town. Walking to the shrine is an easy 20 minute stroll from Shiogama Station. HOWEVER, one acces point to the shrine is up a strenuously steep staircase. There is a less steep staircase (which some will find tiring, especially on warmer days), with flat areas between the next flight of stairs at another access point to the hill.
