Susukino Festival is held every August at Susukino, the center of Sapporo City.
There are about 100 food stalls lined up along the pedestrian street in Susukino, and various events are scheduled such as Oiran Procession, Mikoshi Parade, YOSAKOI Dance, and more.
On August 1, Taiko Drum Performance and Oiran Procession are must-see events.
Oiran were courtesans in Japan mainly in Edo Period (1600-1868). Oiran were considered to be prostitutes, but they are distinguished from ordinary prostitutes where they were entertainers and many became celebrities outside the pleasure districts. Oiran Dochu Procession, woman dressed up as traditional courtesans make a parade, takes place PM20:00～21:30.
On August 2, you shouldn't miss Samba Carnival Parade and YOSAKOI Dance.
And on the final day, Mikoshi portable shrines are carried by over 1000 people and parade with Samba team.
