Awa Dance (Awa Odori) is the most popular traditional dance performed at summer festivals during the Obon season in mid- August in Japan. And it is said that Awa Dance originates from Tokushima Prefecture.
Tokyo's Koenji Awa Dance Festival first began in 1957 as a festival to revitalize the small shopping streets throughout the town. Over the years the festival has grown and now over 10,000 dancers and over a 1,000,000 spectators come making it the festival that represents the charms of Tokyo's summer. The Koenji Awaodori is held every year on the last weekend of August.
There are two main types of dance―energetic "men's dance"(which women can also join) and elegant "lady's dance".
And there are 8 dance performing areas surrounding the JR Koenji Station and Metro Shin-Koenji Station.
In addition, about 30 food stalls are opened. Come and enjoy Awa Dance and festival food!
