The Takayama Festival is known as one of the three most beautiful festivals in Japan, along with Kyoto Gion Festival and Chichibu Night Festival. It is held twice a year in spring and autumn in Takayama, Gifu Prefecture.
The Autumn Festival is the annual festival of the Hiachiman Shrine in the northern half of the Takayama old town, and the festival is also known as Hachiman Festival.

Each year on Oct. 9 & 10, eleven festival floats(mikoshi) are displayed in the streets of Takayama. These festival floats are carried for Marionette(Karakuri) Performance, Mikoshi Procession, and Evening Festival.

Mikoshi Parade : A line of several hundreds of people dressed in traditional costumes such as kamishimo (samurai costume) walk around the festival area with a portable shrine which carries the deity. Shishimai performers (lion dance) and tokeiraku people who wear costumes decorated with spirited fighting roosters and ring bells join the parade.

Marionette Performance : Several of the festival floats are decorated with marionette(karakuri doll), that can move and dance.
Evening Festival : On the first day of the evening, the festival floats with a hundred of lanterns are pulled through the streets of Takayama's old town for 3 hours. This is one of the highlights of the Takayama festival, you can enjoy the fantastic atmosphere as opposed to daytime.

Access: about a 15mins walk from Takayama Station

This is hard to miss as the huge white torii gate can be seen from a distance. There's such an amazing vibe to this place. We wanted to see the floats used in the festival but the museum was about to close, plus there's a fee for that.

Very peaceful and serene. It's located at the bottom of the hill and surrounded by woods. You can walk around the place and climb up the hill, there are a few pathways and shrines here & there. The views from these paths are amazing.

Beautiful location, the walk up from the bridge gave a great old time feel, even in the humidity of summer. See video of approach walk to this area. The shrine is impeccably maintained, with lots to see in the surrounding setting. The floats exhibit hall was great, and the nikkokan museum mini scale models were even better! Worth a trip out to this side of town. Discount tickets only 500 yen if you buy both as a combo. We toured the area in about 60 minutes total.

Enjoy the nice & quiet ambiance with artistic roof of the shrine and big sakura (cherry blossom) logo on the gate. The float exhibition hall and museum, just next door, also worthed to visit.

Worth a visit. Easy to reach out from downtown or any other place in takayama. Evocative Temple in the Edge of the Town and Woods. Located Very close to the down town and at the beginning of a nice walk in the forest
