Oct/11 - 13, 2019 Sawara Grand Festival3.2
from 10/11 '19 to 10/13 '19
Sawara District is located northeast of Katori City, Chiba Prefectuere.
The Sawara Grand Festival is held twice a year in July and October in the region. The summer festival is organized by the Yasaka Shrine and known as Gion Festival, while the autumn one is held by the Suwa Shrine to pray for abundant crop. The festival is called one of the three major float festivals of Kanto, it has a history dating back about 300 years and was registered as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016.
In Autumn Festival, 14 festival floats are pulled around the historic town with Sawara-bayashi, one of the three major festival chants of Japan.
One of the highlights of festival is "no-no-ji-mawashi", in which floats are steered as if they write the "no" hiragana character. Such powerful speed causes each float to press its clear mark of ruts on the road surface.
The vaunted dashi floats made of zelkova wood are decorated with ornate Kanto engraving, with the tops adorned with figurines as tall as four meters made by famous craftsmen from the Edo and Meiji periods, along with other dolls.
