Beautiful world heritage village. They built it in very particular way just so the house can take on heavy snow. If you come visit during winter you will see why it built the way it is. The while town will also be covered in snow, also the whole mountain. You can walk up the top of the hill then the best view there is the whole village itself. If travel from takayama it's about an hour on buses if you don't drive. If travel from Nagoya which most people do. It's 2-3 hours on train then another hour bus so it's quite a trip. Better if you book a reserve bus seat so you know you will get on a bus, sometime the like is long, and the next bus not coming till the next half an hour.

Decided to visit after all the great write up and recommendations. We made the trek from Tokyo. It was a 2D1N trip. Nice to see how the houses were built and still stand the test of time. Would have loved to see them snow covered but alas the weather was too kind on us. We had perfect sunny weather all throughout! :)

Beautiful landscape and extremely picturesque. Never intend to visit but was swayed by a friend who has been here. The houses were very historical and they did not use any nails in the structure of the houses. Great engineering!

A beautiful little town nestled among the hills particularly good if there has been fresh snow. Plenty of small coffee shops and places to eat and plenty of beautiful old buildings to photograph. A must see.
