Jan/15, 2020 Santera Mairi Festival (Three Temple Pilgrimage)3.5
from 1/15 '20 to 1/15 '20
Hida Furukawa Town in Gifu Prefecture holds an annual event "Santera Mairi Festival (Three Temple Pilgrimage)" on January 15. Participants make pilgrimage to three Buddhist temples (Enkoji, Shinshuji, and Honkoji temples) in the town of Furukawa to pay their respects.
This event with a history of over 200 years was traditionally used as an event for young men and women to meet. In the Meiji and Taisho periods, young women working at silk factories in Nagano Prefecture would return to the town and dress up for the festival. As the event served as an opportunity for young locals to meet, it is now believed to bring romance to visitors to all three temples.
You can also rent a traditional Japanese kimono and walk around the town.
