Hakata Okunchi is one of the main autumn festivals in Hakata, Fukuoka.It has about 1,200 years of history held at Kushida Shrine.
"kunchi" or "okunchi" is a local word used in the region to refer to autumn festivals which are held to offer thanks for a bountiful harvest. Hakata Okunchi is known as one of the three major Kunchi Festivals along with Nagasaki Kunchi and Karatsu Kunchi.
On the first day of the festival, the key event takes place in the main hall of the shrine while the mikoshi procession takes place on the second day. The featured mikoshi is pulled by an ox in the center of the procession with side attractions such as lion mask dances, a children's parade, a brass band playing music, and open-top cars from which the Miss Fukuoka is waving to the crowds. It takes about 2 hours.
In addition, there are various events such as a tea ceremony and sumo wrestling tournament scheduled.
Also, you can enjoy shopping fresh seafood or vegetables at the market.
This market is opened from 22 Oct. from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. where autumn vegetables harvested locally and other food products are sold.

Shrine maidens perform various dances as a form of offering to the gods.
-Sentomyo lit-up event 6:00 pm~
This is a lit-up event held within the grounds of Kushida Shrine where more than 2,000 lights are arranged to form various pictures.
-Portable Shrine Parade 2:00 pm~
This is the highlight of the festival. The mikoshi portable shrine is carried by an ox, not people.
