Naritasan Shinshoji Temple is a large and popular Buddhist temple in Narita City, Chiba Prefecture. With the grounds as big as 220,000㎡, it is one of the largest temples in Japan.
Over 10 million people visit there each year, and approximately 3 million people make a first temple visit between New Year holidays.
Peak of congestion will be midnight～3:00 a.m. on Jan/1 and 09:00～15:00 on Jan/1 - 3. And it will take about 90 - 120 mins to arrive the main hall from JR Narita Station during the peak time.
Also during New Year holidays, you can buy limited-time special items including charms.
Special Goma Fire Ritual is held in the main hall.

You will be impressed even though you're not religious. It has very nice architecture. Please pay attention to the details.
If you are religious or just want to have good luck, don't forget to get the luck charm with fire blessing. You can do this ritual all year around.

This is nice very old Japanese temple on the hills. Can see the Japanese culture of worship and rituals. Great place must visit very near to Narita Airport. Only 10 minutes by train.

Very calm and serene surroundings.
A short walk from Narita Station.
Definitely a good way to spend an hour or two.

Amazing. Such an amazing temple,with such history. We were lucky enough to have some local guide volunteers to show us around and explain the history of this 1000 year old temple. There is a regular fire ceremony in the main temple. A must visit.

this culturally acclaimed and tenth century Buddhist temple is one of a kind. features so many pagodas and lots of tourists. went there during a layover and had a really good time exploring all it had to offer. and it is so easily accessible from the international airport. if my memory serves me right, anything between 15 and 30 minutes is all it takes to take in this ageless wonder
