Setsubun Festival at Yoshida Shrine is the traditional festival of Kyoto, which has been lasted since Muromachi period (1333–1568).
During this 3-days festival, three rituals―Ekijin Festival, Tsuina Ceremony, and Karo Festival―will be held.
[Ekijin Festival]
Ekijin means “petrel,” a type of God who brings bad luck. From 8 a.m.on Feb.2nd, this festival is held to wish that petrels will not be in a bad temper and will be calm in the mountains and rivers.
[Tsuina Ceremony]
Tsuina means “to drive out evil spirits.” Around 6 p.m on Feb.2nd, a red demon, a blue demon, and a yellow demon appear in front of the main shrine, and run around roaring. They scare people and make children cry. Then, a four-eyes man called "Hososhi" accompanied by children holding torches chase and hunt the demons down. This is the highlight of the festival!
[Karo Festival]
Karo means “the place where you can make a fire.” This festival is held from 11 p.m, on Feb.3rd. The bonfire consists of piled timber, 5 meters in height. As the flames reach up to the sky, spring comes.

In and around Yoshida Shrine, there are about 800 stalls set up selling food and drink. Enjoy the Japanese festival food!
