Jan/17/2019 - Mar/24/2019 HOKUSAI UPDATED3.7
from 1/17 '19 to 3/24 '19
The representative works of artist Hokusai include the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji series of landscape woodblock prints—which includes the famous The Great Wave as well as the Hokusai Manga (“Hokusai Sketches”), which triggered the Japonism movement that swept through Europe in the 19th century. While these and other of Hokusai’s famous works are generally known, they in fact represent a mere fraction of Hokusai’s works of art created over a career spanning some 70 years.
The exhibition draws close to the real Hokusai through masterpieces from Japan and abroad, recently discovered works, and works on public display for the first time.
Hokusai is know by at least 30 different names during his lifetime, and this exhibition displays around 500 works by 6 different names(Syunro, Sori, Hokusai, Taito, Kiitsu, Gakyo Rojin Manji). Held in Tokyo for the first time in more than a decade, this is a large-scale, comprehensive exhibition of Hokusai’s works. Famous works and precious artifacts collected from throughout Japan and the world provide a long-awaited opportunity to get to know Hokusai’s full story.
