Sounkyo Ice Waterfall Festival is one of the major ice festivals in Hokkaido, held in Sounkyo Onsen, Kamikawa Town.
The average temperature in winter in Sounkyo is below freezing, and especially it falls from 10 to 20 degrees below zero on January & February. Ice Waterfall is formed from the freezing of liquid water seeping on rock.
There are lot of ice sculptures, snow igloos, ice objects, and the huge ice tunnel, and these are illuminated at night. One of the highlights of the festival is the fireworks display. The fireworks are launched from behind the ice sculptures, creating gorgeous fire flowers in the night sky.
Also, various fun events are held, such as Rice Cake Throwing, Lottery, Taiko Drum Performance, and Ice Waterfall Wedding.

It's extremely cold there. The day we visited was only -7°C but it could be as cold as -20°C, so we're very lucky already. It's worth visiting cos the ice sculptures were great. Also, you can rent a tire to play the ice sliding board. When you get tired, you can visit the indoor kiosk for some hot drink and food. It was a wonderful and memorable activity that we have ever experienced.

The matsuri was fun! Ice sculptures were pretty, fireworks was amazing too. There is, however a donation fee/entrance fee of 300 yen (as of now). 😊

A fantastic ice land of buildings made of icicles and carved ice that must have taken weeks to frame up with scaffolding and wood and cover with ice! Stairs of ice that aren't slippery and everything all lit up in amazing colors. And if you get cold, there are hot drinks sold in the ice bar! Definitely worth a visit!
