Furano City is located at the very center of Hokkaido, and called the "belly button of Hokkaido".
The Bellybutton Festival (Hokkai Heso Matsuri) is annually held in July 28, 29 at Furano City, Hokkaido.
The festival's biggest highlight is the "Hokkai belly button dance competition" attended by a total of 4,000 dancers in two days. Participants draw large faces on their bellies and march around. They pull in and out their belly so that the face drawn on them change their expression---smile, cry, and angry.
The Bellybutton Dance Competition starts from 7PM on both days, and a prize of 100,000 yen will be given to the winner. The competition is open to all and the reception starts at 3PM on each day. You can just come and join with empty-handed.
Along with the belly button dance, there are some fun events such as music performance, beer party, food stalls, and belly button marathon are scheduled.
In addition, the firework display is starts from 20:30 PM, on July 29th.
