Over 300 years ago, a statue of Shotoku Taishi moved to another place from Jozen-ji Temple. When the statue left Jozen-ji, people started to suffer a great famine, so people asked for the return of the statue of Shotoku Taishi.
Two years later, in 1628 the statue was given back to the Joren-ji. One night before it came back, the people saw the shape of the statue suddenly shining above the temple’s cherry trees. Seeing a good omen they celebrated the return of the statue and danced all night long and then, they do it every year. This is how the Taishi Odori started.
