Ishioka Festival is a grand festival of the Hitachinokuni-Soshagu-Shrine in Ishioka City, Ibaraki Prefecture.
It is one of the three biggest festivals in Eastern Japan and attracts more than 400,000 visitors every year.
A total of 40 portable shrines, festival floats, and shishi lions parade around the central part of Ishioka city.
Day 1 : Shinko-sai Festival
This is the event which the divine spirit of Hitachinokuni-Soshagu is carried to a temporary housing by a portable shrine.
Around 2 p.m., when the fireworks are launched, the portable shrine with divine spirit and about 2,000 priests depart from the shrine and parade throughout the city.
Day 2 : Hoshuku-sai Festival
On the second day of the festival, sumo wrestling is performed in front of the Hitachinokuni Soshagu as an offering to the gods. Shinto dance are also offered to the gods by Miko priestess.
From 3 p.m., Shishi lion head floats will dance and parade at the street in front of Ishioka Station. And Dashi festival floats will parade from 6:45 p.m.
Day 3 : Kanko-sai Festival
This is the event which the portable shrine with the divine spirit get back to Hitachinokuni Soshagu from the temporary housing. They take the reverse course from the outward route. Around 4 p.m., they arrive at the shrine.
