Ikaho Onsen, near Takasaki City in Gunma Prefecture is a popular hot spring resort town with its good waters.
Between Sept. 18th and 20th each year, the Ikaho Festival takes place around the Ikaho Shrine. On 19th and 20th, eleven Taru Mikoshis (portable shrines made out of barrel) and usual portable shrines will parade throughout the town and go up stone steps to Ikaho Shrine. Taru Mikoshi are carried up not by hands but on lower backs.
This festival is known for its aggressive parade, which people push each other while carrying Mikoshi on stone stairs.
On Sept. 18th, the tea ceremony "Roka Festival" is held to honor a famous writer "Roka Tokutomi". And you can also see "Yukumi Ceremony" which people draw hot water from a hot spring.
