Hojoya Festival, which is one of the three major festivals of Hakata, along with Hakata Dontaku in spring and Hakata Gion Yamakasa in summer is a festival for people to "show appreciation for life itself, warn themselves agains needless killing and express their appreciation for bountiful harvest in autumn."
During the festival period (for 7 days and 7 nights) from September 12th (Wed) to the 18th (Tue), various Shinto rituals and shrine events will be held along the entrance path to the shrine.
In Hojoya this year, the Goshinko ritual (parade of portable shrine) will be performed. Okudari (descent) on Sept.12th and Onobori (ascent) on Sept.14th are going to solemnly carry out with 500 shrine parishioners with a spirit of service. The parade still keep the ancient heritage and looks just like an old illustrated scroll.
During the festival, about 500 hundreds of street stalls, which line the approach to the shrine, offer a variety of attractions such as a haunted house, shooting gallery, Yo-yo fishing, and fresh whole ginger sale.
Sept.12th, from 6:00 p.m.~ Okudari(descent)
The portable shrine departs from Hakozakigu Shrine, and parade through Kyushu University Hospital, JR Yosizuka Station, Hakozaki Elementary School, and then arrives at Tongu(resting place).
Sept.14th, from 7:00 p.m.~ Onobori(ascent)
The parade takes a reverse course of Okudari from Tongu. It takes about an hour to arrive at Hakozakigu Shrine.

I have been here once and I really love the huge shrine public place and I was able to also witness a priest performance when I came. People told me to check out the 放生会 Festival in Autumn. Seems like to be the main attraction here.
Anyway always worth a visit when you come to beautiful Fukuoka!

At September, we went to the “放生会”! The atmosphere was great, good food good staff and good people (over ten thousands people eating and walking on street but no rubbish on floor, you can imagine how they were behaved well). However, no rubbish and no washroom, it was not very convenient for people to go for eating street food and drinking. Although there were 200 shops but most of the food and drinks were repeating. Anyway it was a really great experience during the mid autumn.
