Jan/19, 2020 Maebashi Hatsuichi Festival3.8
from 1/9 '20 to 1/9 '20
The Hatsuichi Festival takes place annually on early-January in Maebashi City, Gunma Prefecture. It has a history of more than 400 years.
People come to give thanks for the past year and wish for good luck in the new year using Daruma Doll. They place their old Daruma on a bonfire. So it is also called Daruma Festival.
The festival starts at 10 a.m. with a ceremonial burning of the previous year's Daruma dolls. And the Shinto ritual is held at Hachimangu Shrine. After that, the Mikoshi (portable shrines) procession starts from Hachimangu Shrine and parades with Kiyari song singers, Tengu(legendary creature of Japanese folklore), and Shishi-Lions along the shopping streets.
The Honmachi Street on Route 50 is closed to traffic, and about 350 festival stalls sell Daruma Dolls, Maneki Cat Dolls, and other good-luck objects are lined up. The atmosphere of the festival is so lively!
