Oita Prefecture is the number one producer of Japanese timber bamboo and known for its traditional bamboo crafts.
Oita Prefecture has the three biggest bamboo lantern festivals―Usuki Takeyoi, Taketa Chikuraku, and Sennen Akari, or Thousand Year's Light Festival.
Sennen Akari (Thousand Year's Light Festival) began as a night event of Hita Tenryo Festival. Approximately 30,000 lighting bamboo lanterns are lined up in Mameda Town and along the Kagetsu River. It crates a magical atmosphere throughout the town.
In Mameda area, which is surrounded by brilliant lights, you can enjoy walking in the town at night, which is different from daytime.
Also, you can see various local folk performances such as a procession with a hundred of people dressed in costumes of Edo period.
