Lake Shikotsu in Hokkaido is known as an unfrozen lake even in the northernmost of Japan.
"Chitose Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival" is a snow event held around Shikotsuko Onsen, about 40 mins away from Sapporo City from late-January to mid-February. There are about 30 ice sculptures made by spraying water from Lake Shikotsu, which is some of the clearest water in Japan, and freezing it.
At night, sculptures are lit up with colorful lights, creating fantastic atmosphere which is totally different from daytime.
Besides viewing ice sculptures, you can also enjoy having local cuisine, shopping, taking a hot spring, watching taiko drum performance and about 300 fireworks launching into night sky on Sat & Sun. Also kids can have fun at an ice slider and a skate link, or riding a horse.

Stunning ice sculptures! The best in Japan, more fun than Sapporo ice festival

I think this is the must-see spot if you visit Sapporo for the ice festival in February. Depending on the weather, this was the first or second part of the day tour which we bought from a Hotel counter in Sapporo city. We went on a big bus with other people and had limited time to spend on each spot that we stopped. Anyway, it was wonderful and I would highly recommend this as place you must visit in winter!

We drove all the way from Sapporo city to here to catch the fireworks and evening light show. It was wonderful. But I would seriously recommend you to come in the day time to see the not just the sculptures but the beautiful the lake too.

We were here too late so we missed out the beautiful lake.

The traffic could be horrendous during the first few days. But in the Japanese culture it’s still manageable as everyone patiently waiting for their turn to park their car.

We drove in the dark and heavy snow on the hilly landscape it was very challenging for me as it was my first experience driving in the snow but as Long as you drive slow then it’s alright.

Went during the daytime and back again in the evening. Even without having children with us it was still a lot of fun and a very unique sight. I have never seen anything like this before. Great for a day trip or if you are staying at a nearby hotspring resort.
