Lake Shikotsu in Hokkaido is known as an unfrozen lake even in the northernmost of Japan.
"Chitose Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival" is a snow event held around Shikotsuko Onsen, about 40 mins away from Sapporo City from late-January to mid-February. There are about 30 ice sculptures made by spraying water from Lake Shikotsu, which is some of the clearest water in Japan, and freezing it.
At night, sculptures are lit up with colorful lights, creating fantastic atmosphere which is totally different from daytime.
Besides viewing ice sculptures, you can also enjoy having local cuisine, shopping, taking a hot spring, watching taiko drum performance and about 300 fireworks launching into night sky on Sat & Sun. Also kids can have fun at an ice slider and a skate link, or riding a horse.

Beautiful. One-of-a-kind experience. Perfect timing. Duration of tour just right. No regrets at all. Highly recommended. When I booked this tour, I requested for an English tour guide. Turns out we didn’t really need a guide. We were promptly picked up at the Century Royal Hotel which was just two blocks from our hotel. The bus ride to Lake Shikotsu took a little over an hour. After stepping out of the bus, we were given exactly two hours to explore the place on our own. Within those two hours, we were able to capture the changing colors of the sky, the sun, and the ice. Don’t miss out on this. I plan to bring my family here soon.

Well designed little winter park. There's a lot to see for both adults and kids. The pine rooms smelled so good! And once it gets dark it's even more beautiful. The only downside is access. The buses from Chitose are not frequent and the last bus back is at only 17:45, barely after dark!

For only 300 yens per person, you get to enjoy some magical ice structures with lighting at night. Not very large, but each structure is interestingly built, I kept thinking how do they do that. Take your time to look at all the details to appreciate the hard work of the team. Bring the kids because they would love it!

Very beautiful ice sculptures. Very very cold so be prepared and dress appropriately. It will actually be more beautiful at night when all the colourful lights illuminate the ice sculpture but please come with your own personal car as it is lacking public transport, foreigners be aware.

Some sculptures had melted due to tge unexpected warmer temperature this year. Entry was free in 2020. Nonetheless, the fireworks against the sculpture, friendly community and the amazing food made it worth the trip. 🚉 🙂👍
