"Katsube Fire Festival" is a traditional fire festival of Shiga Prefecture with 800 years history, and designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Shiga Prefecture.
The festival originates from about the year 1200 when Emperor Tsuchimikado fell ill and fortune tellers traced the cause of the disease to a giant serpent, like the legendary monster "Orochi" (some accounts describe the monster as a centipede). The hero, Fujiwara no Hidesato, pursued the creature and slew it with a bow and arrow on Mount Mikami, after which the emperor made a speedy recovery for which a celebration was held. The festival now represents a prayer for good health.

The main feature of the festival is 12 giant torches with 5-6 meters long, weighing 400 kg.
In the afternoon on the day of the festival, holy sake, sardines, and tofu are offered to each of the torches. Then after three bass drums parade through the streets, twelve giant torches made to look like the body of a giant serpent are assembled in the shrine at 8PM. Young people wearing fundoshi loin cloths recieve flame from the god of fire in front of the shrine and set the 12 torches ablaze all at once. The view of the fire setting the night sky ablaze as if it would reach up into the very heavens themselves is astounding. The gathering then becomes an intense festival where fundoshi clad young people play bells and hand drums and dance wildly, praying for no illnesses and good health with loud shouts of "goyo" and "hyoyo".
