At Sanjusangen-do Temple in Kyoto, an archery contest known as Yumi Hiki Hajime (first draw of the year) is held every year on the Sunday closest to January 15.
Approximately 2,000 participants, both men and women of new 20-year-olds from all over Japan, gather to celebrate and compete by firing the first arrows of the New Year. The view of the rows of 20-year-old women wearing beautiful kimono clothes is the highlight of the contest. They shoot arrows to hit targets standing 60 meters away.
