Minamoto no Yoritomo was opened Kamakura Bakufunate in 13th century, and lost the battle of Ishibashiyama and fled to Awa’s Ryushima by small boat (currently known as Kyonan Town) to plan his comeback. The “Kawazu Zakura” were renamed to “Yoritomo Sakura” in honor of this historical fact, and the town is currently aiming to be Japan’s #1 Sakura viewing location, actively continuing to plant new trees.
Currently, there are 14,000 Yoritomo Sakura Trees planted in the town, with 600 trees along the Hota River, 400 trees at the Sakuma Dam Park, and 400 trees along the Sakuma River.
Each day during the festival period, Yoritomo Sakura Trees are illuminated between 6 - 8 p.m., and the 8-km long Sakura-viewing hike is held from JR Hota Station.

As the highlight of the festival, “Hota River Yoritomo Sakura Bamboo Lantern Festival” will be held on Saturday, March 7 from 15:00 to 20:00, lighting up the Sakura trees. Don't miss the otherworldly sight of the Sakura being lit up with over 2000 candles from handmade bamboo lanterns!

Pleasant and relaxing. Nice place to walk your dog. Cool in midsummer.

The dam is a small lake, pleasant to walk around, with lots of flowers and trees lining the banks. There are some food stalls open on the weekend and holidays. A coffee roaster up the road. It is well known for its winter jonquils and early-blooming sakura.
