Feb/11, 2020 Daito Ohara Water Splashing Festival 3.8
from 2/11 '20 to 2/11 '20
In 1657, there was a big fire in Daito Ohara area of Iwate Prefectrue, and then people started to hold the festival to pray for the protection from fire every year.
From about 9 a.m., local men disguised as a woman wearing traditional kimonos and make-up appear on the street. They parade through the shopping street while dancing to pray for a thriving business. Then they dedicate a giant sacred straw festoon to the shrine. Also local high school students perform a traditional dancing and Taiko Japanese drum.
At 3 p.m., about 300 half-naked men rush into the streets praying for the prevention of fire accident, good health, and realization of a great ambition, as people on the road sides splash cold water over them. This is the highlight of the festival!
This festival is known as one of the most eccentric festivals in Japan, for taking place on cold February. And only men are allowed to participate to run the street and also splash water over men.
