Feb/2 - 3 Setsubun Festival and Ushikae Ritual in Hofu Tenmangu Shrine3.6
from 2/2 '20 to 2/3 '20
Hofu Tenmangu Shrine, Yamaguchi Prefecture, commemorates Lord Sugawara Michizane, god of learning, and ranks one of the three greatest Tenjin Shrine in Japan.
On early-February each year, Ushikae Ritual , or a "changing of the cow" ritual is held at Hofu Tenmangu Shrine. This is the ritual of replacing an old ox with a new one to draw the divine carriage. It is decided by lottery.
As the lottery prizes, gold, shilver, and bronze statues of cows and thousands of items are provided. And surprisingly, the top prize is a live bull that the winner has to take care of until next autumn!
Besides, the bean-throwing event takes place 3 times from 2PM, 3PM, and 4PM on Feb.3rd.

This shrine is an excellent day trip with some great hiking trails behind it that are not the easiest though.

Nice Shrine in southern Yamaguchi! Not exactly worth a trip only to see this place, but definitely worth incorporating into other trips within Yamaguchi!!!
