Jul/30 - 31 Chinowa Festival3.1
from 7/30 '20 to 7/31 '20
Chinowa Festival is the 2 days festival held at Itakiso Shrine, Wakayama Pref., in the end of July each year.
This festival features a large ring-shaped object made of straw, called Chinowa. Anyone who visits the shrine will pass through the Chinowa, for it is believed that this act purifies the person from all the bad things one committed in the past, and bring good luck. This act is known as the "Chinowa Kuguri".
The shrine provides paper dolls to which one transfers one's sins and impurity. This is done by writing your name on the paper doll, and then rubbing the paper doll on your body. Lastly, you breathe on the paper doll. These paper dolls are symbolic of a person's guilt.
The main deity of the Itakiso Shrine in the eastern part of Wakayama City is the Itakiso-no Mikoto, who was written in Japanese Mythology.
