Due to the coronavirus concerns, Gotanshin-sai Festival has been scaled down in 2020. Some events including the Firework Festival(Aug.5), Beer Garden, Calligraphy Exhibition, and Martial Art Matches are canceled. Please check the official website.
Hofu Tenmangu Shrine is the oldest one of 12,000 Tenmangu shrines dedicated to the god of study Sugawara-no-Michizane, and one of the three biggest Japan Tenjin Shrines.
"Gotanshin-sai Festival" takes place there from August 3rd till 5th annually to celebrate the birth of Sugawara-no-Michizane, who was born on August 5, 845.
There are various events such as a candle light festival, calligraphy exhibition, martial art matches, and firework festival.

This shrine is an excellent day trip with some great hiking trails behind it that are not the easiest though.

Nice Shrine in southern Yamaguchi! Not exactly worth a trip only to see this place, but definitely worth incorporating into other trips within Yamaguchi!!!
