Osaka is known as the city of "kuidaore" which translates as eating oneself to financial ruins. You will find this mantra really true in Dotombori. There are stalls serving hot steaming takoyaki and restaurants with colorful neon lights that allure you to Osakan treats such as okonomiyaki (grilled savory pancake), kushikatsu (deep fried skewers), fugu (puffy fish) and kani (crab).

This gourmet strip is easy to spot as the over-the-top, 3-D signs including Glico Running Man and Kani Doraku Crab welcome you at the south entrance. The walkways along a canal (Dotombori-gawa) that runs parallel to the street is a good place to stroll after dinner.

I grew up in this unique and one of a kind city. As the review explains, Osaka(locals call "Minami") offers a wide variety of tasty cuisines that will satisfy your palate. The city also boasts many historical sites such as Osaka castle(one of the largest in Japan), Sumiyoshi shrine, Shitennouji temple and so on. You will surly be impressed by their appearances and significant values. Its easy access to Kyoto, Nara, and Kobe(roughly within an hour) attracts so many tourists as well. I will be glad to show you around this lovely city.

Shinsaibashi is a premier shopping arcade running north-south in the Minami district, one of Osaka's two major retail centers. About 600m long, this pedestrian street provides a wide selection of choices from high-end department stores, both international and Japanese brands such as H&M and Uniqlo, chain stores, kimono shops, boutiques, the 100-yen shop, pharmacies, restaurants, cafes and fresh-from-the-griddle crepes.

As this strip is sheltered from the elements, it is a great escape from a rainy day or a scorching summer day. The southern end meets the Dotonbori River, Osaka's well-known gourmand area. It is recommended that you get off at Namba Station, walk northward through this arcade, and take the train at Shinsaibashi Station instead of walking all the way back.

No other building is so gorgeously covered all over in gold. This is one of many buildings in the precincts but gives the whole location the name of 'Gold Pavilion'. The building is not very big and not the one you can enter, but its glittering figure surrounded by a large serene pond and leafy garden will send you up to heaven.

The original building was erected in 1397 as a retirement villa for a shogun but was later converted into a temple. It has been burnt down many times with the latest case being 1950, when a fanatic trainee monk set it on fire into ashes. The incident was depicted in the novel 'Temple of the Golden Pavilion' by Mishima Yukio. The current pavilion, restored in 1955, uses more gold leaf than ever.

This is in the top five popular sights in Kyoto, so be prepared for the crowds. A visit in early morning or late afternoon is recommended.

The present building was constructed in 1955. What is your aeshetic sense to this building Golden Pavilion ?

This area is at the western outskirts and the base of mountains (known as Arashiyama), filled with many tourist spots. The area has been a popular destination since the Heian era (794-1185) when the nobility would enjoy its natural setting involving the river cruise, full-moon viewing and ambling under overhanging cherry blossoms.

The 154m-long Togetsu-kyo Bridge, literally meaning 'crossing moon bridge', is the central landmark that attracts people viewing cherry blossoms in spring and the full moon and colored maple leaves in autumn. The famous bamboo grove takes you to a mesmerizing, otherworldly atmosphere, and Tenryuji Temple has a spacious garden with 'dry' and 'borrowed' landscape that has been modeled by many other zen temples. Daikakuji Temple is reputed for the huge pond with greenery and gold-glittered screen paintings in the buildings.

This Zen temple in the Arashiyama district has one of the most fascinating stroll gardens in Kyoto. The landscape garden, with its background of the nearby mountains, is a good example of borrowed scenery. A cluster of rocks arranged near the pond suggest a 'dry' cascade, providing a model for similar gardens in other Zen temples.

Another highlight is the Cloud Dragon painting on the ceiling in a temple hall. A huge dragon swirls in the clouds and glares down at the people in the room. No matter where you stand, the dragon is looking straight at you! It is worth the admission.

X12

The garden of this temple is not only worth to see because of its wonderful landscape designed in 14th century but pleasant to walk through looking at various kind of flowers and plants: cherryblossoms, Japanese roses, rhododendrons, azaleas, wisterias, peonies, hydrangeas and so on as well as beautiful colored leaves in autumn, and pretty red berries and camerias in winter. The bamboo forest is located just out of the backgate of the garden.

Nijo Castle was built in 1603 as the official Kyoto residence for the first shogun of the Edo period, Tokugawa Ieyasu. This is a huge wooden edifice surrounded by stone walls and moats, not heavily fortified like the other castles.

The palace rooms are all covered with tatami mats and elegantly decorated with spectacular screen paintings. You will walk along in socket feet and come across the "nightingale" corridor floors which were designed to tell the guards when there were "visitors" in the building.

English audio guides are available for rent at the gate.

Would you like to visit Shogun's residence with me to try to explore the squeaking sound of floor, Nightingale floor?
You can feel magnificent atmosphere and elegant interiors of each room.

X85

Have you ever seen pine trees being pruned by a gardener? It is very interesting. Ninomaru Garden is well maintained, and sometimes we can see gardeners are pruning pine trees. Do you know how gardeners prune the pine trees on the Horai islet located in the middle of the Ninomaru Garden pond? I heard from a taxi driver, that they use a crane machine! I have never seen that. If you see such a pruning operation, you are so lucky!

X27

You can see the chamber, where the Shogun held audiences with his Daimyo, local lords subject to the authority of the Shogun, in the Ni-no-maru or original memaining second court as well as Ni-no-maru Garden, go-round style with a pond in its center and rocks of various colors and sizes arranged artistically, surrounded by cherry, maple, pine and other trees. Possible to appreciate the status of Shogunate.

X24

It is said that the core reason behind the construction of this catle was to monitor the move of the successive emperors in Kyoto in order for the Shogun Tokugawa to maintain its dictatorship.

The visitors are truly impressed by the magnificient paintings, carvings and open works because the lavish amount of gold was used for these masterpieces.

This tower has been an iconic landmark of Osaka since its construction in 1912. The design was inspired by the Arch of Triumph and the Eiffel Tower, for Paris was the model for this area's urban planning. It was the highest structure in the East at that time, standing at 64m. The current 103m-high tower was erected in 1956.

On the fifth floor of the observatory sits a statue of the tower's mascot Billiken. This elf-like creature with a naughty smile is a god of prosperity that is believed to endow a good fortune if you rub the soles of his feet. Nearly a million people visit here annually for good views of Osaka.
