This shrine in the south of Kyoto is famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates straddling the mountain paths, forming mysterious tunnels 4km long in total. This is the headquarters shine for some 30,000 Inari shrines all over the country, dedicated to the god of bountiful harvest and business prosperity. In the main precinct, you will see dozens of fox statues as the fox is considered the messenger of the Inari god.

The torii gates are all donated by worshippers since the 16 century and you will find the donator's name at the back of each gate. The torii tunnel leads you to the top of Mount Inari (233m) and takes about 2-3 hours to make a round tour. Along the path are a few eateries that offer 'inari sushi' and 'kitsune udon', both using deep-fried sliced tofu (aburaage), allegedly a favorite of foxes.

Ginza is Tokyo's most famous upmarket shopping district, with a distinctive snob value. The 1km-long Namiki-dori street is lined with exclusive brand boutiques from Japan and abroad. Old-established department stores such as Mitsukoshi and Matsuya magnificently stand along Chuo-dori street, and elegant females shoppers flock in Printemps Ginza on Sotobori-dori street.

Ginza is not only for shopping appeal. This is the area where cutting-edge trends and prestigious old businesses meet, and there are many restaurants rated highly in the Michelin Guide and popular with Japanophile gourmets. Other main attractions are on the artistic side, with the Kabuki theater, Takarazuka revue hall and 200 or more art galleries dotting the area

Ginza is such a famous upmarket shopping district for anyone that we may sometimes lose sight of the long historical background of its developments in the early Meiji period when Japan aggressively promoted the modernization or westernization of the Japanese political and social systems. I will be so happy to be able to share with you such intriguing historical developments of Ginza District.

Ginza is the combined name of "Gin" and "Za" in Japanese language. Gin means slver and Za means mint. There was the silver mint in this location while Japan was dominated unde the dictatorship of Shogun Tokugawa. Ginza has two faces which are modern and old. Let us explore both faces of Ginza.
