Nagoya Castle is a symbol of Nagoya city, it was constructed on the orders of Ieyasu TOKUGAWA in order to secure an important position on the Tokaido road. Construction was completed in 1612, and the castle is typical of those built on flatlands. Until the Meiji Restoration in 1868, Nagoya Castle flourished as the castle in which the Owari lineage of the Tokugawa family, the foremost of the family’s three lineages, resided.

In May 1945, during the air raids on Nagoya in the Second World War, most of the buildings including the main and small donjons, and the Hommaru Palace, were burned down. The main donjon was rebuild in 1959, unfortunately it was built with reinforced concrete and quite different from the original donjon.

But Nagoya city office started reconstruction of Hommaru Palace in 2009 about 150 million dollars budget, and main entrance and part of Palace was completed in May 2013, and opened to the public. This new building was built with basically same material and construction method, and we can see the original paintings on the sliding doors and walls. I sincerely recommend everyone to visit now the original Japanese Castle style building and construction site. I am really excited and it is a great pleasure to show you!

Atsuta Shrine is one of the great three Shrines, they are Ise, Meiji and Atuta. Atsuta Jingu is a Shinto shrine traditionally believed to have been established during the reign of Emperor Keikō (71-130) located in Atsuta-ku, Nagoya. The shrine is familiarly known as Atsuta-San (Venerable Atsuta). Since ancient times, it has been especially revered, ranking with the Great Shrine of Ise. The 200,000 m² shrine complex draws over 9 million visitors annually.

According to traditional sources, Yamato Takeru died in the 43rd year of Emperor Keiko's reign. The possessions of the dead prince were gathered together along with the sword Kusanagi; and his widow venerated his memory in a shrine at her home. Sometime later, these relics and the sacred sword were moved to the current location of the Atsuta Shrine.

One of the greatest hero in the Warring States period of Japanese history, Nobunaga ODA was born near Nagoya, and before going to the famous battle of Okehazama in 1560 against Yoshimoto IMAGAWA, he went to Atsuta Shrine to pray the victory. He won the battle and thanked to Atsuta Shrine and he donated Wall to the Shrine. The Nobunaga-bei (wall) is still existing and we can see even now.

I am looking forward to seeing you in my favorite place in Nagoya.
