No other building is so gorgeously covered all over in gold. This is one of many buildings in the precincts but gives the whole location the name of 'Gold Pavilion'. The building is not very big and not the one you can enter, but its glittering figure surrounded by a large serene pond and leafy garden will send you up to heaven.

The original building was erected in 1397 as a retirement villa for a shogun but was later converted into a temple. It has been burnt down many times with the latest case being 1950, when a fanatic trainee monk set it on fire into ashes. The incident was depicted in the novel 'Temple of the Golden Pavilion' by Mishima Yukio. The current pavilion, restored in 1955, uses more gold leaf than ever.

This is in the top five popular sights in Kyoto, so be prepared for the crowds. A visit in early morning or late afternoon is recommended.

This temple is situated on a hill with a huge terrace that has a commanding view of Kyoto. The spot has been attracting pilgrims since the 8th century, and a Japanese idiom deriving from this temple - "take the plunge at Kiyomizu Temple" (meaning: jumping off from the cliff / take a leap of faith) - is still well used today.

Below the main terrace is the Otowa waterfall where people make a line for a drinking ceremony, as Kiyomizu means 'pure water'. In the precincts, there is a small Shinto shrine that is dedicated to the deity of love and matchmaking. The Niomon entrance gate and the three-story pagoda, both important cultural properties, stand magnificently.

The uphill road to the temple is also fun with plenty of touristy stores to poke around in. It is recommended to come here in cherry blossom or autumn foliage season.

In particular, since Kiyomizu Stage stands 13 meters high, you can get a full view of Kyoto city from here.
Moreover, Kiyomizu means "pure water" in japanese.
Since it is said that water at the spring in this temple will purify their soul and make their wishes come true, please visit this temple.

World Heritage: Kiyomizu Temple
X33

So many people visit Kiyomizu Temple and there are so many interesting spots to describe. We can enjoy very much visiting Kiyomisu Temple along with some places.

X12

A lot of people tried jumping off from the cliff so far, but no need to worry. Many merciful trees with flexible branches have saved their lives. Please do not forget to try the water of the Otowa waterfall. Since ancient times the water has been believed to have beneficial effects such as preventing illnesses.

X8

The ascending approach leading up to the temple buildings is lined up with various shops and is always crowded with so many visitors. You may, therefore, feel as if you visited the festival spot.

However, once you step into the precincts of the temple, such festival mood soon disappears and you realize that you are in the divine zone of Buddha.

X18

This temple is most visited by both Japanese and guests from other countries. It is beautiful with lots of varieties of trees all seasons. I will post one with young leaves in May. It is really refleshing.

This shrine in the south of Kyoto is famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates straddling the mountain paths, forming mysterious tunnels 4km long in total. This is the headquarters shine for some 30,000 Inari shrines all over the country, dedicated to the god of bountiful harvest and business prosperity. In the main precinct, you will see dozens of fox statues as the fox is considered the messenger of the Inari god.

The torii gates are all donated by worshippers since the 16 century and you will find the donator's name at the back of each gate. The torii tunnel leads you to the top of Mount Inari (233m) and takes about 2-3 hours to make a round tour. Along the path are a few eateries that offer 'inari sushi' and 'kitsune udon', both using deep-fried sliced tofu (aburaage), allegedly a favorite of foxes.

This castle, completed in early 17th century, is one of few castles in Japan that retain many of its original buildings. Although the interior of the castle keep is relatively small and the wooden steps are very steep, a magnificent view of Lake Biwa from the top is rewarding. There are a guardhouse, a three-story watch tower, and a museum that are worth visiting.

This is a beautiful castle to visit in any season, but spring is the best with more than 1,000 cherry trees laden with blossoms. Visitors will perhaps meet the mascot Hikonyan, a cat sporting a samurai helmet.
