This 2-story wooden building is a symbol of the city and the early era of Hokkaido's development. It was constructed in 1878 as a drill hall of the Sapporo Agricultural College, the first institution for agricultural studies in Japan. Among the students was the agricultural economist, educator and author Nitobe Inazo, who wrote "Bushido: The Soul of Japan". The large clock tower with four faces was purchased from a Boston manufacturer. It is a 10-minute walk from JR Sapporo Station.

In the port city of Otaru, 40km northwest of Sapporo, you can enjoy a leisurely stroll along a beautiful canal. Extending 1,140m and 20-40m wide, Otaru Canal was constructed in 1923 as a major transport route connecting the port and warehouses with barges. The warehouse buildings were renovated into historical museums and shops.

The cobble stone walkway along the canal is dotted with monuments and sculptures that explain the historical development of the city. During the evening, the old Victorian-style gas lamps are romantically lit.

Nisseko, a two-hour drive southwest of Sapporo, is a world-class ski resort famed for its tons of light powder snow. Along the eastern slopes of the mountain Niseko Annupuri (1308m) are four interconnected resorts, largely funded by Australian investors. An annual average snowfall of 15m attracts a large number of international skiers seeking off-piste skiing in powder up to their waist.

There are increasing efforts to turn Niseko into a year-round resort. A variety of outdoor activities such as horse riding, ballooning hiking, rafting, canoeing and fishing are getting popular from spring to autumn. You can also enjoy craft courses for glass and leatherwork items, as well as workshops to create cheese and ice cream.

Lake Toya is a typically round caldera lake in the southwest of Hokkaido. On the southern side of the lake are a number of hot springs and two active volcanoes, one of which, Mount Usu, erupted in the year 2000. For its geological importance, the area was designated Toya Caldera and Usu Volcano Geopark in 2009.

The lake, with a large island sitting in the middle, is the third largest caldera lake in Japan, followed by Kussharo Lake and Shikotsu Lake, both in Hokkaido.

Toyako Onsen is a large hot spring resort along the southern shore of Lake Toya, with a number of free hand baths and foot baths. Among major waterfront highlights here are the famous Toyako Marathon in late May, a festival on manga and cartoons in June, a firework display on the lake every night from May to October, and a nightly Bon dance party throughout August.

Lake cruises offer good views of the island in the middle and nightly fireworks. The trail walk to the craters of Mount Usu, which resulted from its eruption in 2000, is an exciting experience. You can also enjoy some of 58 artworks dotted around the lake and two nearby camp sites. There are several other Onsen resorts around the lake.

The country's northernmost zoo attracts a huge number of visitors, from Japan and overseas, with its unique interactive viewing facilities. Located in Asahikawa City in the middle of Hokkaido, the zoo has created a variety of facilities inducing natural behaviors of each animal, instead of just "showcasing" them.

Visitors in the glass dome in the middle of enclosure can see polar bears rushing toward them. The orangutan trapezes and the walk-through penguin aquarium enable you to watch their active behaviors. The zoo is very clean and barely smells, making "the viewers smile all the time".
