This 2-story wooden building is a symbol of the city and the early era of Hokkaido's development. It was constructed in 1878 as a drill hall of the Sapporo Agricultural College, the first institution for agricultural studies in Japan. Among the students was the agricultural economist, educator and author Nitobe Inazo, who wrote "Bushido: The Soul of Japan". The large clock tower with four faces was purchased from a Boston manufacturer. It is a 10-minute walk from JR Sapporo Station.

In the port city of Otaru, 40km northwest of Sapporo, you can enjoy a leisurely stroll along a beautiful canal. Extending 1,140m and 20-40m wide, Otaru Canal was constructed in 1923 as a major transport route connecting the port and warehouses with barges. The warehouse buildings were renovated into historical museums and shops.

The cobble stone walkway along the canal is dotted with monuments and sculptures that explain the historical development of the city. During the evening, the old Victorian-style gas lamps are romantically lit.

Lake Toya is a typically round caldera lake in the southwest of Hokkaido. On the southern side of the lake are a number of hot springs and two active volcanoes, one of which, Mount Usu, erupted in the year 2000. For its geological importance, the area was designated Toya Caldera and Usu Volcano Geopark in 2009.

The lake, with a large island sitting in the middle, is the third largest caldera lake in Japan, followed by Kussharo Lake and Shikotsu Lake, both in Hokkaido.

Goryokaku in Hakodate is a former Western-style fort built in 1866 in the form of a five-pointed star. Under the Kanagawa Treaty of 1854, Hakodate was one of the first ports to open itself up to international trade, and this fort was designed to defend against the possible imperial threat from the Western powers. After losing its military importance, the fort was changed into a public park in 1914.

With some 1,600 cherry trees lining its moats, this is a wonderful "bastion of flowers". The views from a paddleboat and a 107m-high tower is marvellous. The best season is between late April and early May.

Hakodate's crowning gem is the view of the harbor city at night from the top of Mr. Hakodate. Most believe that the view is not only one of the top three night views in Japan (the other two being Kobe and Nagasaki) but one of the top three in the entire world, competing with Hong Kong and Naples.

At night, the twinkling city lights on hourglass-shaped Hakodate contrast the dark water on both sides, and the black expanse of nearby sea, from June to December, is studded with lamps on squid fishing boats.

The daytime expansive vista is also spectacular. A ropeway takes you up to the top in three minutes. The mountain, with a height of 334m and a circumference of 9km, is not very big and shaped like a crouching cow seen from a distance.
