Goryokaku in Hakodate is a former Western-style fort built in 1866 in the form of a five-pointed star. Under the Kanagawa Treaty of 1854, Hakodate was one of the first ports to open itself up to international trade, and this fort was designed to defend against the possible imperial threat from the Western powers.
