Sakurajima is a round promontory that hosts smoke-spewing active volcanoes, Kagoshima's iconic symbol. Originally an island, the area was connected to the nearby peninsula in the southeast due to the massive lava flowing from the 1914 eruption. In the center stand three volcanoes higher than 1000m, one of which has been very active since 1955.

From the city of Kagoshima, the area is reached by the 15-minute ferry, which offers marvelous views of the volcanoes and surrounding nature. Around the port is the visitor center with a museum and the 100m-long foot bath of hot spring waters. There are many walking trails around the volcanoes and an outlook at 373m. Sakurajima is also famous for its huge turnip-like radish weighing 6 to 30kg.
