Yakushima is a subtropical island off the southern coast of Kyushu and is a haven for huge ancient cedar trees, some of which are more than 3,000 years old. This round island is full of mountains with height ranging from 1,000m to 2,000m, thus attracting so much rainfall that locals often claim there are "35 rainy days per month" in exaggeration. The forests are very humid with grounds covered with intense green moss.

During the Edo period, the island served as the source of cedar lumbers that were transported to southern Kyushu and other faraway places including Osaka. Some forests with cedars more than 1,000 years old were registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. Today most visitors come here to see these ancient cedar and enjoy mountain hiking and sea kayaking. trees. As the public transportation is almost non-existent, it is recommended to hire a car to get around the island.
