Words can't describe the overwhelming beauty of this gorge. Two volcanic eruptions of Mount Aso around 100,000 years ago covered this area with lava, which later on formed a chasm in the columnar joint process, and was gradually eroded by the river, now known as the Gokase River. The waters are transparent, and your heart will be awash with the beauty of soaring cliffs, rapids carving out rocks, and spring waters trickling here and there.
The most popular is the spot where you can view a waterfall (Manai Waterfall) at the narrowest area of the gorge. Put on a life jacket, and get onboard a small two-man boat to paddle down for half an hour. There are always crowds of people, but once you are out in the water, noises are drowned out and sounds of splash and water birds touch your heart. Looking down at the ravine from above is also fascinating, with illumination lit up until 10pm in the summer.

One of the top spots to visit in Miyazaki. It’s a bit out of the way without a car and requires a lot of walking. Probably needs at least half a day to explore. Take nice pictures, do the boat ride, eat some local food, and visit the nearby shrines!

fantastic thing to do in southern Japan. I would recommend going to get a boat as soon as you get there since you may have to get a ticket and wait a couple of hours before you can actually get a boat. However, there's plenty to do while you wait, like a walking path, or eating lunch!

Fresh air, beautiful scenery, and a relaxing vibe are what you can expect. The rowing took a bit to get the hang of, but the depth and clarity of the water make it a beautiful blue/green. You need to make reservations for the boats, and if you're taking a tourism taxi or car, I would recommend arriving before the bus at 10ish to get the best pictures before it gets busy.

The gorge is very beautiful and calm place. There is also a falls which has mesmerizing view. You can rent canoes and ride for 30 mins. But it needs a pre-booking. Booking will be open a week before and closes 2 days before. Unfortunately we didn't know and missed the ride. So if you are planning to visit, do book in advance and don't miss the opportunity. There is a small pond with fish and ducks, you can feed the food. the food is available on the spot, so please don't feed human food.

We visited Takachiho Gorge during May 2021. We were nearly the only visitors, which made this place worth visiting. I couldn't imagine to enjoy the waterfall and the river with hundreds of other people around. We walked up to the big old bridge and enjoyed the different rock formations build by the lave streams. You need to pay for the parking which is not too expensive and the entrance is free anyway. The boat rental is with more than 3000 JPY really expensive.
