Words can't describe the overwhelming beauty of this gorge. Two volcanic eruptions of Mount Aso around 100,000 years ago covered this area with lava, which later on formed a chasm in the columnar joint process, and was gradually eroded by the river, now known as the Gokase River. The waters are transparent, and your heart will be awash with the beauty of soaring cliffs, rapids carving out rocks, and spring waters trickling here and there.

The most popular is the spot where you can view a waterfall (Manai Waterfall) at the narrowest area of the gorge. Put on a life jacket, and get onboard a small two-man boat to paddle down for half an hour. There are always crowds of people, but once you are out in the water, noises are drowned out and sounds of splash and water birds touch your heart. Looking down at the ravine from above is also fascinating, with illumination lit up until 10pm in the summer.

Beautiful place in Takachiho. A bit tourist-y despite the distance from every major city. Renting a boat is nice but relatively expensive for the experience (2000 yen for 30 minutes, many boats are sailing at the same time). I recommend to take the hiking path following the river to see all of the gorge's glory

One of the best highlight of our trip in Kyushu. It is not easy to reach here but we had day tour guide to drive us around. It was fun rowing a boat in the gorge. Don't worry about needing a swimsuit or a change of clothes, you won't get wet in the gorge.

A very relaxing place with beautiful view. Good for photo shooting, boat barging and even walk around. Can also try the flowing noodle, quite funny.

Very cool gorge. You can get great sights from above and you can also go down to the water. Down by the water, you can rent a paddle boat that can be ridden by 1 to 3 people. It’s 2200 yen for 30 minutes, totally worth it. You can also get little cookies to give the ducks for 200 yen. All the ducks were asleep when I went so couldn’t use any of my duck food.

GOOD - Wonderful and heart breaking view

TERRIBLE - we drove and forced to park our car at the outer parking where we are required to walk up/hill staircase to the scenery (1-2km).

My family consist - old folk (70+) and baby. The lady at the parking entrance was not considerate at all and stop us to going in to the inner parking......

RECOMMENDATION - please go early to avoid being stop and park outside.....unless, you enjoy hiking and walk along the stairs where u can enjoy as well scenery...
