Words can't describe the overwhelming beauty of this gorge. Two volcanic eruptions of Mount Aso around 100,000 years ago covered this area with lava, which later on formed a chasm in the columnar joint process, and was gradually eroded by the river, now known as the Gokase River. The waters are transparent, and your heart will be awash with the beauty of soaring cliffs, rapids carving out rocks, and spring waters trickling here and there.

The most popular is the spot where you can view a waterfall (Manai Waterfall) at the narrowest area of the gorge. Put on a life jacket, and get onboard a small two-man boat to paddle down for half an hour. There are always crowds of people, but once you are out in the water, noises are drowned out and sounds of splash and water birds touch your heart. Looking down at the ravine from above is also fascinating, with illumination lit up until 10pm in the summer.

Nice gorge that give the opportunity to rent a row boat and see the scenery from below. If you happen to arrive hungry there are a couple places to eat or to at least get some snacks. You can park really close so it is a short walk and easy to squeeze in if you are short for time.

Beautiful and scenic. Great views when walking the path above the gorge.
The boats are nice, but I dont think are really worth it: you cant row very far into the gorge. Still, a great photo opportunity

Timing if visit is important. We wanted to catch the autumn colours but the colours were not out by mid November 2018. The scenery is otherwise quite stunning. I believe you could access this place via the main road but our GPS took us through narrow windy road.

A good fun place but hiring a boat is a must. Also it is best to park on the opposite end of the gorge to the boat hire so that you walk through the gorge itself. Rowing is easy and although there was a queue when we arrived we didn't have to wait long.
Like other visitors we did find it a bit tricky to find using the sat nav, which took us to the wrong place.

You can explore a small area of the gorge up to 30 minutes on a rowing boat. The boat fee is a bit expensive at ¥2000 but it's worth it. Be careful not to put your finger on the rim of the boat neat the cliff or another boat.
It was crowded even on December 21, when most Japanese people are still busy on their business. So expect an even longer wait if you visit in Japanese holiday seasons.
