Words can't describe the overwhelming beauty of this gorge. Two volcanic eruptions of Mount Aso around 100,000 years ago covered this area with lava, which later on formed a chasm in the columnar joint process, and was gradually eroded by the river, now known as the Gokase River. The waters are transparent, and your heart will be awash with the beauty of soaring cliffs, rapids carving out rocks, and spring waters trickling here and there.
The most popular is the spot where you can view a waterfall (Manai Waterfall) at the narrowest area of the gorge. Put on a life jacket, and get onboard a small two-man boat to paddle down for half an hour. There are always crowds of people, but once you are out in the water, noises are drowned out and sounds of splash and water birds touch your heart. Looking down at the ravine from above is also fascinating, with illumination lit up until 10pm in the summer.

Pretty lovely gorge with some pleasant and crafty things to do here like "noodle catch" at a particular eatery here where they slide the noodles down a bamboo shoot and you grab em up and put them in the sauce and eat. There's also boating and a nice hiking path.

Very beautiful gorge with short bush walk trails around the area and a chance to rent a boat and go down a stretch of the river. However, a very long trek from cities. Best to go by car or tour bus

Beautiful natural scenery, nice walk through the area with plenty to take in and some rest stops along the way. Worth a visit but be warned - there will be a lot of tourist. Come on a clear day if you can to see the clear water. There are sections with a bit of climbing so not mobility device friendly.

Beautiful walking path along the gorge. However, it's quite a short walk and you can't really explore around much so consider visit somewhere else after this. We only spent roughly 1.5hrs here.
Nonetheless, really enjoyed our time! Less people than any other attraction and the weather was just incredible - mild winds but sunny throughout the day.
Note: worth looking into the free parking space instead of paying if you don't mind a bit of walking.

Beautiful place in Takachiho. A bit tourist-y despite the distance from every major city. Renting a boat is nice but relatively expensive for the experience (2000 yen for 30 minutes, many boats are sailing at the same time). I recommend to take the hiking path following the river to see all of the gorge's glory
