Words can't describe the overwhelming beauty of this gorge. Two volcanic eruptions of Mount Aso around 100,000 years ago covered this area with lava, which later on formed a chasm in the columnar joint process, and was gradually eroded by the river, now known as the Gokase River. The waters are transparent, and your heart will be awash with the beauty of soaring cliffs, rapids carving out rocks, and spring waters trickling here and there.
The most popular is the spot where you can view a waterfall (Manai Waterfall) at the narrowest area of the gorge. Put on a life jacket, and get onboard a small two-man boat to paddle down for half an hour. There are always crowds of people, but once you are out in the water, noises are drowned out and sounds of splash and water birds touch your heart. Looking down at the ravine from above is also fascinating, with illumination lit up until 10pm in the summer.

Very beautiful waterfall and getaway from everything. You will need a car or bus reservation to get here. You can rent a little paddle boat, walk along the bridges, try some noodle water slides and fishing.

From Kumamoto it takes about 3 hours to arrive at Takachiho Gorge by bus. You will need to queue up for the boat ride as it is the most popular activity that most people would want to do. The walk around the gorge was relaxing. If you come around fall or spring this place would be very pretty. There are also shrines to visit if you decide not to queue up for the boat ride. There is also a train ride for kids. Recommended place to visit if you’re visiting Kyushu for the first time.

Lovely and scenic. A nice trail along the gorge, with lovely sights around every bend. Absolutely worth seeing if you are in the region.

Gorgeous place to visit! Be careful about time if you want to row the boats. We have missed our a few times. First 2 times due to weather but this time because it was going to be a 3 hour wait and we didn't have the time. Wish you could swim here but you can't. Nice food at the main restaurant-really good steak! Lots to look at here and walking paths. Half a day to a whole day here depending what you do
