Words can't describe the overwhelming beauty of this gorge. Two volcanic eruptions of Mount Aso around 100,000 years ago covered this area with lava, which later on formed a chasm in the columnar joint process, and was gradually eroded by the river, now known as the Gokase River. The waters are transparent, and your heart will be awash with the beauty of soaring cliffs, rapids carving out rocks, and spring waters trickling here and there.
The most popular is the spot where you can view a waterfall (Manai Waterfall) at the narrowest area of the gorge. Put on a life jacket, and get onboard a small two-man boat to paddle down for half an hour. There are always crowds of people, but once you are out in the water, noises are drowned out and sounds of splash and water birds touch your heart. Looking down at the ravine from above is also fascinating, with illumination lit up until 10pm in the summer.

Take the boat adventure. If it is not crowded, then it will be best. It's a whole new level of feeling rather than just looking at picture. とても良い気持ちになれるよ！

Recommend getting here early as it gets busy quickly. If it's raining the unlikely you can get on a boat as the gorge water gets rough. Very scenic walking path

Beautiful spot but we missed the boats as we got there too late. I recommend arriving before 3pm if possible. We you can walk the length of the gorge and there are maps to show you the paths.
The drive up via miyazaki route 218 is absolutely beautiful. If you start early I recommend this route.

Pretty lovely gorge with some pleasant and crafty things to do here like "noodle catch" at a particular eatery here where they slide the noodles down a bamboo shoot and you grab em up and put them in the sauce and eat. There's also boating and a nice hiking path.
