Words can't describe the overwhelming beauty of this gorge. Two volcanic eruptions of Mount Aso around 100,000 years ago covered this area with lava, which later on formed a chasm in the columnar joint process, and was gradually eroded by the river, now known as the Gokase River. The waters are transparent, and your heart will be awash with the beauty of soaring cliffs, rapids carving out rocks, and spring waters trickling here and there.
The most popular is the spot where you can view a waterfall (Manai Waterfall) at the narrowest area of the gorge. Put on a life jacket, and get onboard a small two-man boat to paddle down for half an hour. There are always crowds of people, but once you are out in the water, noises are drowned out and sounds of splash and water birds touch your heart. Looking down at the ravine from above is also fascinating, with illumination lit up until 10pm in the summer.

Nice but the gorge itself is extremely small. You can definitely spend 30 minutes in the gorge not rowing at all but if you’re rowing it’s probably 15 mins max. The boat rentals are 20,000 yen for 30 minutes. There is one waterfall. Lots of ducks in the pond. Nice area to hike but a ways out. There’s only 2 buses in and 2 buses out each day.

A great and must place to visit. Before you reach the gorge you need to walk a while. Prepare some walking shoes with you. After being there you can take a small boat to move along the gorge. Best time to go there is autumn.

This is a very beautiful gorge. There is a nice walking path you can enjoy along the gorge.
This place is crowded on weekends, so I suggest you to visit it on weekdays. There are some shops and restaurants near the bus stop. You should go for a walk first then come back to have some refreshments before you catch the bus back.

An amazing gorge with clear waters and a tall waterfall. The scenic view makes it one of the best sites to visit in Kyushu. You can either paddle a boat or view from above - both offer delightful experiences.

Nice gorge. Came in the evening when it was quiet and virtually empty. Do the easy walk down the path alongside the gorge. Worth doing if you are in the area but I wouldn't come to Kyushu just for this, unlike Taroko Gorge in Taiwan for example.
