Udo Shrine, a 1-hour drive from the city of Miyazaki, occupies an open cavern overlooking the ocean. Climbing up 438 steps and down 277 steps along the cliff, you will reach a torii gate that leads to this shrine under a huge overhanging rock. This shrine is dedicated to the father of Emperor Jimmu, the legendary first emperor of Japan.

Because of legend that the breast-shaped rocks in the cave nourished Emperor Jimmu in his babyhood, today expectant mothers come here to pray for the safe delivery of their child. You can try fortune telling with undama (luck stones) by throwing them to the shallow depression on top of the turtle-shaped rock. Souvenirs includes horse dolls, and candies made with drips from the breast-shapes rocks.

Udo Shrine is one of Japan's most unique shrines, it is built along a cliff and cave at the end. You will see along the cliff the beautiful ocean and the gates and lanterns. It's a shrine dedicated to the bunny, you will see many statues of bunny's everywhere. After you cross the tunnel at the beginning of the trail after the parking lot, you will find a lot of shops on the way down. One shop has a bunny as a pet, he is big. At this shop you can have a type of custard in a bottle, drink a orange juice mixed inside the shell of the orange and taste other great things.

It was a crowded place with lots of people. However, the location of the shrine makes it so unique, therefore attracts so many visitors. The place is a MUST VISIT spot in Miyazaki. Because, you rarely find such a gorgeous natural beauty out there.

I went there summertime of 2016, pretty nice and clean. Several souvenir shops. There is a myth among locals that it grants the couple’s wish to have a child. The only drawback is the location. If you’re coming from Miyazaki downtown then it would be quite a ride by car., it took us about an hour. If you use train then you have to walk quite far. The terrain is also sloping so I recommend you to wear flat soled shoes.

You'll need a good pair of legs to get up and down the substantial amount of uneven stairs to see this lovely and peaceful shrine. Snuggled into a cave, this cave is a favourite with young couples hoping to have children and a happy marriage, I am told, but even if neither category is relevant to you, this shrine overlooks some very interesting and incredibly smooth rock formations, and you have the chance to throw pebbles onto these rocks for good luck if you please.

If you are travelling to see this shrine on our own, the most efficient way is to take the bus that specifically stops in the parking area for tourist buses and cars for the shrine. If you are taking the bus from Miyazaki train station, go to the information booth just beyond the entrance doors to the bus terminal and ask for the bus timetable. There are two different sets of times depending on whether it is a weekday or weekend. There is a very helpful gentleman at the information booth that can speak English and can give you an English information timetable. On board the bus, announcements are made over loudspeaker as to the upcoming stops in 4 different languages- Japanese, Korean, English and Mandarin so you'll know when you get off.

If you are also planning to travel to other tourist places in Miyazaki, then the best value for money is getting an all day buss pass, that will allow you to hop on and off for 1000 yen per adult the whole day. These passes can be bought at the information booth.

Be aware that transport here, as like the rest of the Japan arrives and leaves on time 99% of the time. So plan your trip around Miyazaki very wisely and be aware of the time, lest you just miss a buss and have to wait another huge stretch of time to catch the next one.

You have to walk a little bit, but you would be surprised to see the shrine. People try to throw Undama, lucky balls. Landing the Undama in the target, which is the turtle shape rock, brings you good luck!
