Udo Shrine, a 1-hour drive from the city of Miyazaki, occupies an open cavern overlooking the ocean. Climbing up 438 steps and down 277 steps along the cliff, you will reach a torii gate that leads to this shrine under a huge overhanging rock. This shrine is dedicated to the father of Emperor Jimmu, the legendary first emperor of Japan.

Because of legend that the breast-shaped rocks in the cave nourished Emperor Jimmu in his babyhood, today expectant mothers come here to pray for the safe delivery of their child. You can try fortune telling with undama (luck stones) by throwing them to the shallow depression on top of the turtle-shaped rock. Souvenirs includes horse dolls, and candies made with drips from the breast-shapes rocks.

One of the most beautiful shrine in Japan, seaside with the red shrine. You have to walk around 15 to 20 minutes from the car park to the shrine. It’s definitely worth to do that. The myth or stories behind the shrine are interesting too, better do some research or study before you go to there.

Incredible shrine built into a cliff wall. Informational signs around the temple are exclusively in Japanese, so if you want to learn more about the temple while you're there be sure to be with someone who can read Japanese or settle with Google Translate.

Be sure to pat the 撫でうさぎ ("Patting Bun") near the back of the cave for good luck!

Shrine is located under the cave by the Cliff of the mountain. Very beautiful shrine well organized staffs. Narrow road to get there one way in-out be caution to drive. Free to get in and free parking.

I went there summertime of 2016, pretty nice and clean. Several souvenir shops. There is a myth among locals that it grants the couple’s wish to have a child. The only drawback is the location. If you’re coming from Miyazaki downtown then it would be quite a ride by car., it took us about an hour. If you use train then you have to walk quite far. The terrain is also sloping so I recommend you to wear flat soled shoes.
The pictures were taken on the winter of 2018.

You have to walk a little bit, but you would be surprised to see the shrine. People try to throw Undama, lucky balls. Landing the Undama in the target, which is the turtle shape rock, brings you good luck!
