Uchinomaki Onsen stetches before sprawling paddy fields inside the somma, surrounded by mountains in all directions. The resort is located to the south of Mount Daikambo (936m), and some 30 onsen ryokan and hotels are scattered over a large area without forming a cluster. There are high-end traditional ryokan, large resort hotels, small family-friendly inns and others, catering for many different needs of tourists.
If you like Japanese literature, this resort is an interesting place. More than 100 years ago, famous novelist Natsume Soseki and the poet couple Yosano Akiko and Tekkan visited here, staying at two traditional inns, Sannokaku and Sosango, respectively. Both inns are still in operation and hold some literary monuments in their grounds. Another highlight are a dozen of comfortable public bathhouses, some of which have outdoor baths and are patronized by locals.
