A majestic 2-story gate welcomes you to Takeo Onsen, a hot spring resort boasting a history of more than 1200 years. This resort was described in a local gazetteer compiled in the 8th and also mentioned in a public document issued by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who unified Japan in the 16th century. There are records that many historical figures traveled all the way to soak in.
There are 3 public bathhouses and a dozen or so of ryokan inns, and the transparent alkali waters are supposed to be great for nerves, stomach and intestines. The area is also well known for pottery making, hosting a number of kilns in the surrounding area. The nearby Mifuneyama Garden is a huge Japanese garden with rocky hills, famous for its azaleas and maple trees.
