During 3rd to 5th of November, the city of Karatsu celebrates a parade of gigantic floats dating from the 17th century. A dozen or so floats, dedicated to Karatsu Shrine, are colorfully decked out and feature guardian lions, sumurai helmets (kabuto), phoenix, dragon and other auspicious animals and legendary characters. Each float weighing more than 2 tons is placed on the wheeled platform and tugged along by dozens of men with ropes.

The floats are exquisitely crafted using Japanese paper in hundreds of layers and lacquered several times all over. As night falls on the first day, a float representing a red guardian lion, the forerunner, departs from the town center, beautifully lit up with lanterns and to the sounds of flutes, drums and bells. All the floats are displayed in front of JR Karatsu Station at noon on the third day.
