Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine4.1
A 5-minute walk from Dazaifu Station, this shrine is dedicated to the 9th-century distinguished scholar and politician, Sugawara Michizane. He got involved in political rivalry in the Kyoto court and was demoted to the distant government office of Dazaifu, where he died two years later. Subsequent plagues and disasters that killed his political rivals were blamed on the unjust treatment, and he became deified as god of culture and scholars.
Today this shrine is the headquarters of around 4,000 Tenmangu shrines throughout the country. During the entrance exam season, many students flock to these shrines to pray for passing the exams and obtain good luck charms. Plum trees are typically seen at the shrines because Michizane was fond of them. In Dazaifu Tenmanugu Shrine, there are about 6,000 plum trees which bloom in February and March.
