Iya Valley is a steep gorge in the dense mountain forest in the western part Tokushima Prefecture. There are narrow roads hanging the cliffs, ranging from 20m to 200m in height. This has been a secluded, off-the-beaten-path area for many centuries, and in the 12th century, the defeated Taira clan members are said to have escaped and settled here after the Gempei War (1180-1185).

Key attractions include the vine-made suspension bridges crossing the ravine, some of which are about 4om long and 2m wide, and the 200m precipice with a statue of a peeing boy stands standing at the edge. There are onsen inns atop the cliff and the views of autumn foliage are very stunning. Enjoy buckwheat noodles and konnyaku (jelly-like health food), both specialties in the region.

A scenic valley.

Ok, so this place is amazingly beautiful but not for people who are afraid of heights. I personally hate heights so a vine bridge spanning a river is the worst. And my friends suck for making this a destination, but it’s worth it for the views. The roads to get there are a little tricky and narrow, so be prepared.

Went on a road trip and passed by 祖谷 on a February. The wintery scenery was incredible - we made multiple stops to climb down to the gorge and take a look at the blue waters and the dramatic mountains.

In a country full of urbanization and commercialization of its tourist sites, Iya Valley was a treat in getting a taste of untouched, natural Japan. It is not very accessible through public transit, so please take your own vehicle! It also allows you to take your time to appreciate the scenic views (and the statue of the pissing boy).

The autumn leaves were very beautiful. It's a place where one is able to relax.

The statue is interesting as it is very similar to the famous "manneken pis" un Brussels.
