A famous dance song has lyrics like this - "Fools dance and fools watch, if both are fools, why not be dancing fools?" This explains everything about the Awa-odori, one of three major dance festivals in Japan held during the bon season when people honor their ancestors. Not only dancers but spectators get to have an irresistible feel to want to dance.

Awa is the former name for Tokushima Prefecture, and this dance festival takes place everywhere in the prefecture, with the biggest observed in the city of Tokushima. Every night from 12th to 15th August, people wear yutaka (light cotton kimono) and straw hats to flock to the streets, accompanied by the music of drums, flutes and shamisen. This dance has a history of 400 years and has become so popular that similar festivals are now taking place throughout the country.
