If you are a fan of Studio Ghibli's animation film "Spirited Away," this onsen in central Matsuyama is a must-go. The Honkan ('main building') erected in 1894 is a castle-like three-story public bathhouse, which provided a model for the bathhouse for deities in the film. The building has a watchtower on the rooftop, where the time-telling drum is lively struck three times a day.
Dogo Onsen is considered one of the oldest hot spring resorts in Japan. It is described in the Manyoshu poem anthologies in the 8th and 9th centuries, and the earthwares and arrowheads excavated around here date back to 3,000 years ago. In the literary field, the 20th century saw Matsuyama rise to prominence, and a famous novelist (Natsume Soseki) frequently used the bathhouse here and wrote a story set in this city.
