In the bullfighting rings operated by the city of Uwajima, bulls weighing 1 ton of more collide violently five times a year. The event is locally called 'Bull Sumo Wrestling', where two bulls bump into each other in a 20m-diameter ring. Victory is decided when one bull forces the other to its knees or when one flees from the ring.

Fights are held on 2nd January, the first Sunday of April, 24th July, 14th August and the fourth Sunday of October. In July, Ushi-oni ('bull demon') Festival is during 24-26th, with many gigantic bull floats parading the streets swinging their heads to fend off evils.
